CONTRIBUTIONS OF INTERNET
INTRODUCTION: Communication is a basic human need and for that reason, man has always found a means of satisfying this need. It is believed that no human society can function effectively if there is no exchange of ideas, experiences, etc between and among the people within the society since no man can live in isolation from others.
The earliest forms of trado-media, interpersonal and group forms of communication had the benefit of being easy to use and did not necessarily need complex technologies. The weaknesses of not being able to communicate to large audience led to the development of mass media such as telegraph, newspapers, magazines, radio and television and to the recent Internet/ICT/ which has helped in broadening the scope of international mass communication that is why cable TV or satellite televisions are able to disseminate to lots of home local and international.
Advancement in modern technology has revolutionized all facets of communication during the past decades. Access to people and information practically anywhere and anytime in the world has been quicker, cheaper and easier.
Awake (2002) cited in Kur (2004), posits that the dynamic nature of the 2ls century and more centuries to come rests on technological revolution. No wonder, Marshall McLuhan, a Canadian English Professor in 1964 propounded the concept of “Global Village” regarding the entire globe as having the potentials of becoming a “global community” where information and news about anything and anywhere in the world would be readily available for anyone’s consumption in any part of the world and without mincing word, the impact of International Network (Internet) in achieving this feat cannot be underestimated.
Internet is a short form of international network or inter-network which is a means of communication that is capable of reaching the entire people in the globe in a very fast, effective and efficient manner. The Internet is a global network connecting millions of computers. More than 190 countries are linked to exchanges of data, news and opinions. (Wikipedia, 2016).
To access the internet, you not only need an internet connection, but you also need a device to access the internet. The range of devices to connect to the internet is increasing by the day. We access the internet on desktop, laptop computers and now on a Smartphone or a tablet, and the internet is now on a smart TV among other devices. :
According to Internet Live Stats, cited in Vangie, (2015) establishes that as of August 07, 2015, there was an estimated three billion, one hundred seventy-nine million thirty-five thousand two hundred (3,179,035,200) Internet users worldwide. The number of Internet users represents nearly 40 percent of the world’s population. According to (world meters.info) the world population is below 7.4 billion with the projection that more than 5 billion people will be online by 2020. (CiCso, 2015). The largest number of Internet users by country is China, followed by the United States and India and in September 2014, the total number of websites with a unique hostname online exceeded 1 billion. This is an increase from one website (info.cern.ch) in 1991. The first billion Internet users worldwide was reached in 2005. (Vangie, 2015).
It should be noted that the Internet begins with the development of electronic computers in the 1950s. Initial concepts of packet networking originated in several computer science laboratories in the United States, Great Britain, and France. The US Department of Defense awarded contracts as early as the 1960s for packet network systems, including the development of the ARPANET (which would become the first network to use the Internet Protocol.). (Colin Barker, 2014). Later internet is been used to monitoring security, war and crime all over the world. For instance, ICT/internet was used to monitor the operation and execution of Osama Bin Ladin.
