Abstract: This study investigates the impact of ai-generated content on journalism ethics and standards: analyzing challenges and opportunities among journalists in River State. The objectives were to examine the extent of AI usage in news gathering and reporting, identify commonly utilized AI technologies, assess journalists’ awareness and understanding of AI capabilities and limitations, evaluate AI’s impact on journalistic accuracy and public trust, and explore ethical challenges in AI integration. Anchored on Social Responsibility Theory and Technological Determinism Theory, the study provides a theoretical basis for understanding the interplay between technology and journalistic ethics. A cross-sectional survey design was employed, using a questionnaire to gather data from journalists selected through consensus sampling. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, presented in tables, to highlight trends and insights. Key findings reveal a low level of awareness and training in AI among journalists, which limits its adoption. The absence of clear ethical guidelines further exacerbates challenges, creating uncertainty and potential misuse of AI tools. However, the study underscores the transformative potential of AI in automating tasks, enhancing data analysis, and personalizing content. Recommendations include investing in comprehensive AI training, developing clear ethical frameworks, fostering collaboration with AI experts, and implementing continuous monitoring of AI’s impact on journalism. Addressing these gaps can empower journalists to leverage AI responsibly and effectively, ensuring high-quality, ethical journalism.
