Abstract: This study examines the impact of ChatGPT on writing skills among University students, framed within the context of the Technological Determinism Theory. This theory posits that technology drives societal changes and influences human behavior, suggesting that tools like ChatGPT may significantly shape students’ writing practices. A cross-sectional survey research method was employed, targeting a diverse sample of students from various academic disciplines. Data was collected using a structured questionnaire, designed to assess the frequency and nature of ChatGPT usage, perceived improvements in writing skills, and any shifts in academic behaviours attributed to this technology. The data was analyzed using frequency and percentage methods, providing a quantitative overview of the students’ responses. The findings reveal that a substantial proportion of students utilize ChatGPT regularly as a writing aid. Many students reported enhancements in their ability to generate ideas, improve sentence structure, and refine grammar. However, there were also concerns regarding over-reliance on the tool, potentially diminishing students’ ability to develop independent writing skills. Based on these insights, it is recommended that Rivers State University integrate comprehensive training on the effective use of AI tools into their curriculum. Additionally, educators should encourage a balanced approach, promoting the use of ChatGPT as a supplementary aid rather than a primary writing source. Future research could explore the long-term effects of such technologies on academic performance and writing proficiency. By understanding the implications of technological determinism, educational institutions can better navigate the integration of advanced tools like ChatGPT, ensuring they enhance rather than hinder student learning outcomes.
