INFLUENCE OF SMARTPHONE ON THE READING HABITS OF UNIVERSITY OF LAGOS STUDENTS

Abstract

The study is set out to examine the influence of smartphone on the reading habits of students with a case study of University of Lagos students. The study was anchored on technological determinism theory. The research used survey research method coupled with 200 copies of questionnaires that were administered to respondents within University of Ibadan in which 180 copies were correctly filled and analysed using frequency and percentage table method. The data collected were analysed and interpreted in frequency and percentage method. Findings show that smartphones have enable students of University of Ibadan to have instance access to internet, watching videos, selfies and storing of information among other things compared to the past mobile phones. It was gathered that lots of respondents (89%) use smartphones largely in UI with majority of them using Infinix and Techno products than other phones. Students busiest activities on smartphones including social networking with friends and family, search for information on engines, watching on youtube and sending/receiving emails. Students also admitted that, they use their smartphones for learning and academic advancement in general especially among students who know their onions, especially for assignments and research. It is recommended that several online resource material related to academic subjects be offers free or partially free upon admission.
