What is a Research?
INTRODUCTION: Research means different things to different people (students), while different names are given to explain it, it is called project, research or thesis among others. In this post, I will explain what is a research. Research is a process of collecting, processing and analysing data collected about a phenomenon with the aim to know more about the issue, solve problem or explain the phenomenon.
Let examine some scholarly definition of research to give it more depth and perspectives so that the concept of research could be effectively and carefully captured. “Scientific Research is systematic, controlled, empirical and critical investigation of natural phenomena guided by theory and hypotheses about the presumed relations among such phenomena.” (Kerlinger and Rinehart, 1986).
Research is an organized and systematic way of finding answers to questions. Research must be systematic and follow a series of steps and a rigid standard protocol. These rules are broadly similar but may vary slightly between the different fields of science. Research means an objective and systematic search for pertinent information on a specific topic. Research is considered to be the more format, systematic intensive process of carrying on the scientific method of analysis. It involves a more systematic structure of investigation, usually resulting in some sort of formal record of procedures and a report of results or conclusion’ John W. Best
Search for facts- answer to questions and solutions to problems. It is a purposive and organized inquiry’. Research is the systematic process of collecting and logically analyzing data for some purpose. An unusually stubbom and persisting effort to think straight which involves the gathering and intelligent use of data (Hamtiin,1966).
